Bio
Born from the basements of Albany, NY, indie-rock band Canella thrives on creativity, spontaneity, and a unique blend of alternative rock flavors. With lead singer and songwriter Juliana Castrillón at the helm, Canella crafts criss-cross-applesauce bedroom songs turned into explosive indie-rock energy.
Originally from Bogotá, Colombia, Juliana’s blunt songwriting is the heart of the band’s sound. Joined by bassist Joe Taurone (Bruiser and Bicycle, Laveda), guitarist Gabe Klingler-Horn (The Grandmals), and drummer Dan Carr (Dan Carr and the Cure for Asthma, Laveda), each member brings their own flair to the music, transforming Juliana’s acoustic songs into vibrant, high-energy rock anthems. The group is known for its unfiltered approach—making choices that make them laugh, cry, and fight.
Canella’s stage presence is as raw and lively as their music. Juliana’s contagious energy as she dances and flails is mirrored by her bandmates, whose electrifying performances teleport you into an unforgettable musical experience. Over the years, Canella has built a reputation for delivering high-octane, emotionally charged performances, playing major festivals like Tulip Fest in Albany, NY, and Alive at Five, where they opened for Vanessa Carlton.
Their distinctive sound has earned them accolades, including multiple awards from local college radio station WCDB for ‘Best Song of the Year’ in 2021 and 2022. Canella has also shared stages with celebrated artists such as mxmtoon, Chico Romano, Laveda, and many more. As part of the Tummy Rub Records collective, Canella is proud to collaborate with and support fellow Albany musicians who share their passion for pushing musical boundaries.
With their powerful riffs, catchy pop melodies, and a dash of rebellious spirit, Canella invites listeners into their world of unpredictable, genre-defying rock. Friends and fans often describe them as an unexpected force—like the bold, warming flavor of cinnamon, their sound surprises and captivates, leaving an impression that lingers long after the music fades.
